Protection, with purpose
Start with the difference you want to make for the people you love.
These goals can overlap. Final expense is often a smaller whole life policy; mortgage protection describes a need commonly addressed with term life insurance.
A simple place to begin
Three quick questions to help you prepare for an insurance conversation. No insurance knowledge needed.
This guide suggests a topic to explore. It is not a quote, an eligibility decision or a personalized policy recommendation.
Know your options
A good conversation includes what a policy can do, what it costs and what you'll need to keep it in place.
Permanent life insurance
Protection and cash value potential.
IUL combines a death benefit with cash value whose interest may be linked to an index. You are not directly investing in that index.
Ask about charges, caps, participation rates and funding requirements. Illustrated values aren't guarantees. A floor on credited interest does not prevent fees from reducing cash value; insufficient funding can cause a policy to lapse.
Smaller coverage, a specific purpose
Help with the expenses left behind.
Final expense coverage is often a smaller whole life policy intended to help with funeral costs and other end-of-life bills. Beneficiaries generally decide how to use the money.
Ask about health questions, coverage limits and any waiting period or graded death benefit. Immediate full benefits are not available under every policy.
Permanent life insurance
A long-term commitment to protection.
Whole life typically provides lifetime coverage, level premiums and guaranteed cash value when required premiums are paid, subject to the policy's terms.
Ask which values are guaranteed and which depend on dividends. Dividends aren't guaranteed. Loans and withdrawals can reduce benefits; surrendering early can be costly.
Protection for a major responsibility
Help loved ones stay in their home.
Life insurance can provide money that loved ones may use toward the mortgage if you die while covered. Term insurance is commonly used to match the years a mortgage remains.
Ask about the term, benefit amount and beneficiary. This is different from private mortgage insurance (PMI), which protects the lender. It doesn't automatically cover missed payments or unemployment.

Good questions to ask
That's a useful place to start. Think about who depends on you, how long they'll need support and what you can afford consistently. The three-question guide gives you a topic to discuss, rather than choosing a policy for you.
Pricing depends on the insurer, policy, coverage amount, age, health and other underwriting factors. A monthly budget is a starting point for a conversation, not a quoted premium.
Check your benefit amount, whether coverage continues if you leave and whether it covers your family's needs. Individual coverage may complement workplace benefits, but the right amount depends on your circumstances.
Yes, goals can overlap. A death benefit may help with a mortgage, funeral expenses and ongoing living costs. An appropriate mix depends on your budget, desired coverage period and policy terms.
Have an idea of your monthly budget, existing insurance, mortgage balance and the people you want to protect. Only share sensitive details through a verified, secure application process.
No. Non-guaranteed values depend on policy terms and performance. Approval and product availability depend on underwriting, the insurer and your state. Review guarantees, exclusions, fees and funding requirements in the actual policy.
